NORMAN A. HENRY
#162 - BROTHER EZEKIEL
Hi my name is Norman Alexia Douglas Henry, Jr. I am in the college of Business studying Business Management. My favorite things to do are play basketball, football or poker with the fellows. My favorite song is “Crossroad” by Bone Thugs-N-Harmony and my favorite rap artist is Nas. I am one of 8 siblings. Being the second oldest can be hard sometimes because I feel like since I am the oldest boy, I have to be the role model. I have a twin brother who attends UMASS Amherst for Pre-Med. I was born on January 13, 1992. My mom’s name was Karen Ann Daily. Since the passing of my mother I have lived with my uncle, Levi Tucker and my aunt Alicia Tucker.
I also live with their two sons who I treat as my bothers. Without these two people in my life I feel college would have never been in my future and I love and appreciate everything that they have done for me up until this point. My uncle works at Foxwoods and loves his job so much that he has been working there for over 13 years off and on and still to this day, he say that there is something new that he does every day. I have a large Jamaican family on my dad’s side that I have never gotten to see because of the distance, but I one day hope to visit them in Jamaica. Since my mother was adopted, I really don’t know too much about her side of the family but I love the man that I call grandpa as if he was my blood grandfather.
My soul passion in life is to one day own my own barbershop in a city somewhere. I remember the first time I walked into a city barber shop when I was seven; I knew this is where I need to be in life. Ever since then, I have not changed my goal of becoming an owner of a barbershop. I currently work at PR Barbershop on Broad Street in Providence. My interview to get the job was not like any normal interview I was use to and I got a little nervous, but when I took my client and started to cut his hair my nerves went away and I got the job. I love the feeling of a haircut so much that at the age of 14 I started practicing on myself and found out I cut my own hair just as well as any other barber. The only thing about my family knowing that I can cut hair is that they always need cuts from me and I can’t charge them. I wake up every day and say to myself “Norman, you will make it”. Like all great artist, whether it’s singing, rapping, dancing, or painting, I have put in my 10,000 hours of work that’s needed in order to master my craft.
I want to become a member of Tau Epsilon Phi Fraternity because they are a strong organization on campus and really take care of their own. As a brother, I know I will always have a tight bond with a group of Brothers who I can say did the same things I did and made it out strong. In this short amount of time I have spent with them so far I have already learned how to really get to something that you really want. I feel that this organization will better my future and I hope to one day help the future of this fraternity.
JUSTIN A. FREYER
#163 - BROTHER COVENANT
My name Is Justin Andrew Freyer and I am 19 years old, from a town called Mount Laurel in New Jersey. I am the middle child of three boys, Josh is my younger brother and Aaron is my older brother. Growing up as the middle child definitely wasn’t easy. It often felt like I was stuck within my family. I would have to follow the standards Aaron had set before me, as well as set a great example for Josh to follow. Thinking about it now I realize that my brothers had helped me develop my character and become the person I am today.
My mother Elaine and my father Joel have been more than supportive to me in everything I do in life. I often become overly stressed but my mom is always there to guide me through life’s toughest challenges. My mother grew up with parents who survived the Holocaust, which has given me a perspective on life that I wouldn’t trade for anything. My father is the hardest working person I have ever seen. He has always been there to provide for my brothers and I as well as being a great role model.
In middle school and high school I never really had a solid group of friends. From first meeting me people usually think I’m a weirdo because of how straight forward I am with what I say. I pride myself on my unique personality and how I carry myself. One of the best lessons I have ever learned was to not care about what anyone else thinks because the only opinion that matters is my own. My taste in music is very different also, people don’t understand some of the things I listen to, but I believe having a unique taste in music is beneficial to being your own person. Bands like My Morning Jacket, Arcade Fire, and Kings of Leon are my go-to artists of choice, but I also listen to a lot of Jazz and Classic Rock as well.
Coming to Johnson & Wales I was very nervous. I didn’t know if I was going to make any friends or if I would like Providence. My older brother was in a fraternity when he was in college and has always told me how great it was to be a part of an organization bigger than yourself. So I looked into Greek Life at Johnson & Wales and was greatly disappointed in the type of people I was meeting. That all changed when I met the Brothers of Tau Epsilon Phi Fraternity. Last year I went to one of their informational meetings and was immediately welcomed with open arms. They spoke to me like they had known me my whole life and made it evident that they wanted to know me on a personal level. I knew that this group of men was definitely something I really wanted to become a part of.
I hope to bring my personality and creativity to TEP if I am accepted. I will make it my top priority to give the best of myself to the organization and let TEP make me a better person as well.
